MSC has announced that it will extend its Piracy Risk Surcharge and Suez Canal Surcharge to all Mediterranean destinations, including ports in North Africa.

The change applies to cargo moving from Asia and takes effect from 15 November 2026, based on the shipment's proforma date. The following charges will apply until further notice:

  • Piracy Risk Surcharge: USD 55 per TEU.
  • Suez Canal Surcharge: USD 36 per TEU.
  • Combined surcharge: USD 91 per TEU.

What this means for Libya-bound cargo

The wider coverage means Asia-origin cargo booked with MSC for Libyan ports may incur higher freight costs.

Customers should request an updated quotation before finalising a booking. They should also confirm whether the charges apply to their shipment, whether they are already included in the quoted price, and how long the quotation remains valid.

The announcement applies specifically to MSC. Other carriers may use different routes, charges and effective dates.

Melita Shipping will continue monitoring carrier advisories and can help customers review current routing and quotation information for cargo moving to Libya.
