Where positions come from
Ships broadcast their position, course and speed over AIS. Volunteer shore stations in the AISStream network hear a ship within about 40 nautical miles of a coast, and we chart the cargo ships and tankers among them.
Why the south is quiet
The stations stand on the coasts of southern Europe. None reaches the open sea or the African shore, so a ship bound for Libya is held where it last reported, drawn hollow, until it is heard again.
